Translational Immunology
and Infectious Disease
Program
Immunology and infectious disease research are at the forefront of solving major health problems pertaining to emerging infectious diseases like COVID-19 and AIDS, autoimmune diseases like lupus, Type1 diabetes, IBD, and various cancers. The mission of the Translational Immunology and Infectious Disease focus area, sponsored by the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, is to provide a means for NextGen medical students interested in gaining insights into experimental approaches to address immunological and infectious disease problems. The focus area-associated faculty are investigating mechanisms underlying immune responses to develop and improve vaccine design, cancer immunotherapy, transplantation of solid organs and stem cells, autoimmune diseases, immunosenescence, HIV virology/therapeutics, and molecular mechanisms of viral carcinogenesis. This program offers medical students an opportunity to interact with both clinical and basic scientists and get training in state-of-the-art concepts and methods in the study of the immune system and to participate in the development of novel therapeutics for immune-mediated conditions and infectious diseases.
